Timing

Confirm your desired Medicare start date. Decide whether you need Part A. Decide whether you need Part B. Confirm whether you are automatically enrolled or need to apply. If working past 65, confirm whether you can safely delay Part B.

Employer Coverage

Confirm employer size. Ask whether coverage is based on current employment. Ask how the plan coordinates with Medicare. Review spouse and dependent coverage. Review COBRA or retiree coverage rules if applicable.

HSA

Confirm whether you or your employer are still contributing to an HSA. Stop HSA contributions at the correct time before Medicare begins. Watch for retroactive Part A if enrolling after 65.

Coverage Choice

Decide between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. If choosing Original Medicare, compare Supplements. If choosing Medicare Advantage, check doctors, hospitals, referrals, prior authorization, and out-of-pocket maximums. Consider travel flexibility and future ability to switch.

Prescriptions

Make a medication list. Include dosage and quantity. Choose preferred pharmacies. Compare total estimated yearly drug cost, not just premium. Check prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits.

Final Steps

Apply for Medicare if needed. Confirm effective dates. Enroll in Supplement, Advantage, and/or Part D as appropriate. Set up payments. Give new insurance information to doctors and pharmacies. Save plan documents and review annually when appropriate.
